Having fun with composting |
Composting
101 has visited several schools in the Westman area.
In Manitoba, composting fits with the science curriculum best
in Grades Three, Seven and Eleven, but other grades also benefit.
For example, vermicomposting fits well with Grades One and
Four.
During a typical school presentation we talk about composting
and vermicomposting, linking these concepts with what students
may have already learned about decomposition, feeding and
digestion, soil, living things, recycling and the environment.
Students have a chance to touch and smell humus from different
sources. Often we build a vermicomposter that is left in the
classroom for the students to take care of. A family information
package is sent home with the students.
