Having fun with composting

Composting 101 has visited several schools in the Westman area. In Manitoba, composting fits with the science curriculum best in Grades Three, Seven and Eleven, but other grades also benefit. For example, vermicomposting fits well with Grades One and Four.

During a typical school presentation we talk about composting and vermicomposting, linking these concepts with what students may have already learned about decomposition, feeding and digestion, soil, living things, recycling and the environment. Students have a chance to touch and smell humus from different sources. Often we build a vermicomposter that is left in the classroom for the students to take care of. A family information package is sent home with the students.
