Families Ready to Work Composting Into Daily Lives

By Darci Clark – For the Sun

With Earth Day circulating the globe tomorrow and Compost Awareness Week just around the corner April 28 – May 4, the time is ripe to introduce a new environmental venture in our community – Compost Quest.

As a monthly adventure in reality reading, this column will follow two intrepid local families – one urban and one rural – as they learn to incorporate backyard composting into their busy lives. We will show, vicariously, that average Westman households can be turned green with little disruption to routine and a bit of support from those in the know.

The idea of publishing a ‘real-life’ composting journal came about as part of a larger community action project called “Composting 101”. This project features a unique partnership of public and private, non-profit and entrepreneurial, local and Provincial government parties with a single goal – to promote the economic and environmental benefits of backyard composting in our community.

With survivalist shows now a cultural norm, we know projects such as this will have many triumphs and tribulations along the way. Though family identities will not be revealed until further into the growing season to build up both their experiential repertoires and composting confidence, the Composting 101 team will be there with guidance and support at each step throughout the upcoming year.

Although community pride is its own reward, we believe no quest should be without more concrete expressions of appreciation. As thanks for walking the green walk for all of us, these two sporting families will be treated to some well-earned R & R at the Victoria Inn to celebrate their year in the eco spotlight.

You, the reading public, cannot vote anyone off anything, but we hope you will follow their experiences with interest– maybe even accepting the challenge to try your own hand at it. Most of us experience guilt that we aren’t doing more to be environmentally responsible, but changing our behavior is never easy. The good thing about composting – like most of the 3R’s – is that it is not rocket science. These families will help de-mystify the composting process and share with us how to recycle organic waste the old fashioned way.

For more information on all types of composting, call us at 727-5675 or 725-9234. Composting 101 provides presentations, demonstration workshops and educational material to help make backyard composting second nature.
